Ujima Company is proud to present Young Jean Lee’s groundbreaking play Straight White Men, a sharp, funny, and unflinching look at privilege, identity, and family dynamics. Set during a holiday gathering, the play follows three adult brothers and their widowed father as old traditions and new realities collide. With humor and heart, Straight White Men asks big questions about responsibility, success, and what it means to live authentically in today’s America.

When Ed and his three adult sons come together to celebrate Christmas, they enjoy cheerful trash-talking, pranks, and takeout Chinese. Then they confront a problem that even being a happy family can’t solve: When identity matters, and privilege is problematic, what is the value of being a straight white man?

As a theatre company committed to telling bold and necessary stories, producing Straight White Men is part of our mission to challenge audiences to think critically about status and power. We believe theatre is a space not only to uplift our own stories but also to interrogate the forces that shape all of our lives. Young Jean Lee’s work invites our community into a vital conversation about whiteness, masculinity, and belonging – examined through the lens of a company deeply engaged with the realities of Black life. Reflecting our conviction that confronting whiteness is just as important for Black theatres as it is for white ones, and in doing so, we create a rare opportunity to see what shifts when Black artists take on the performance of whiteness and hold it up to the light.
